Nikkei Cultural Society Japanese Cultural Fair Oct 20 #yyjevents @EsquimaltRec
Victoria, BC – Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society (VNCS) is hosting the 13th annual Japanese Cultural Fair on Saturday, October 20th from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, 527 Fraser Street. This free event features traditional Japanese entertainment, Japanese cuisine, kids’ activities, and craft tables.
VNCS President Tsugio Kurushima says the fair is a celebration of culture as well as the major fundraiser for the society. “It is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the Japanese culture within the community and to raise money for projects throughout the year,” says Kurushima. Money raised from food, craft, and raffle ticket sales supports garden restoration, cultural groups, and grants for other community projects.
Visitors at the fair can enjoy Bon Odori dancing, Taiko drumming, live music, and martial arts demonstrations by local groups. VNCS members will also demonstrate ikebana flower arrangements, a Japanese tea ceremony, and traditional calligraphy. There will be green tea, sushi, manju (a Japanese sweet cake), and other baked goods for sale.
