Wednesday, October 17, 2012
For Immediate Release

VICTORIA – Tonight Mayor Fortin will make a presentation to the 2012 Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia. The Commission is currently hearing from British Columbians regarding the proposed redrawn federal riding boundaries in the province.

Mayor Fortin’s presentation will focus on the desire to keep the community of Victoria West within the boundaries of the federal riding of Victoria. Under the current boundaries, all of the City of Victoria is contained with the federal riding. The proposed changes would see Victoria West join the newly named riding of Esquimalt – Colwood.

“I believe it is valuable to have our entire community represented by one Member of Parliament. It enhances our sense of community identity and cohesion, as well as ensuring productive communication between elected officials at the city and federal government,” said Mayor Dean Fortin. “While I appreciate the difficult task facing the commission, I want to highlight that the City has been served well under the current boundaries and we are hopeful they can remain intact.”

The hearing in Victoria takes place Wednesday, October 17, starting at 7 p.m. at the Victoria Conference Centre.
