Victoria BC – A pair of off-duty VicPD officers are being hailed as heroes this morning after stopping an armed robbery involving a handgun.

Just before 6 a.m. at the corner of Pembroke Street and Dowler Place a woman was being robbed and beaten by a 32-year-old Saanich man. She had been thrown to the ground, kicked and threatened with a handgun.

Two off-duty officers, who were out for a morning run, heard the woman’s screams for help and raced to her assistance. When they got close the robber spun around and pointed the handgun at the officers.

The officers engaged in dialogue with the man in an attempt to diffuse the situation. Finally after some tense moments passed the robber confessed it was only a pellet gun, and that’s when the two officers pounced and subdued the man.

Patrol officers were already en route and arrested the man. The woman’s scream for helps had generated numerous 911 calls. She had been kicked a number of times and treated by paramedics on-scene.

A 32-year-old Saanich man is being held in police custody and is being charged with robbery.
