Victoria Pumpkin Smash Nov. 3-4 #yyj @viccomposted

Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre’s
Annual Pumpkin Smash
November 3-4!

As we decorate our doorways with cobwebs, carve our pumpkins, and buy candy for trick-or-treaters there is little thought put toward the scariest part of Halloween – the frightening number of pumpkins thrown into the garbage!

It’s estimated that over 730 tonnes of pumpkins go to the landfill each year, where decomposition without oxygen can take decades. Give your jack-o'-lantern a proper burial in our compost bins with fun games for the whole family.

The Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre hosts its annual Pumpkin Smash to help pumpkins rest in peace in their large compost bins. With fun family games and admission by donation, there is no better way to honour the passing of your treasured pumpkin and the spooky holiday!

In partnership with Thrifty Foods, Ellice Recycle and the CRD, pumpkins can be smashed at one of four Thrifty Food locations on November 3rd and 4th from 10am to 3pm.

On the Saturday Nov 3rd, Pumpkin Smash’s giant bins will be at Fairfield Thrifty Foods (1590 Fairfield Road) and Broadmead Thrifty Foods (777 Royal Oak Drive), and at Cloverdale Thrifty Foods (3475 Quadra Street) and Admirals Walk Thrifty Foods (1495 Admirals Road) on the Sunday Nov 4th.

There will also be drop-off locations for those that don’t have time to make it to the weekend Smash. Ellice Recycle will have drop-off bins at their Diversion Facility located at 524 David Street and at the Canteen Road Yard and Garden Waste Drop-off at

605 Canteen Road from November 1st – 7th from 8am to 5pm.

Saturday, November 3rd 10am - 3pm at Fairfield and Broadmead Thrifty Foods

Sunday, November 4th 10am - 3pm at Cloverdale and Admirals Walk Thrifty Foods

The Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre is centrally located in Victoria to provide composting and organic gardening education to CRD residents. The Centre is also your regional “one stop compost shop”, selling composting supplies and offering free Composting Basics workshops.
