Date: Wednesday, October 03, 2012
Victoria BC – Yesterday morning VicPD arrested a man wanted on several warrants out of Coquitlam, after he initially fled from police at a traffic stop.
The 32-year-old Port Coquitlam man was arrested at the Red Lion Inn, located at 3366 Douglas Street, around 1:30 a.m. He was wanted by Coquitlam RCMP on warrants for two counts of assault and three counts of breach.
The arrest came hours after he was initially stopped by a VicPD K9 officer at a traffic stop on Burnside Road. The officer was dispatched to the area as part of VicPD’s intelligence-led, hot-spot policing model, which deploys resources to identified problem areas.
After being stopped for suspicious behaviour, the man fled in his BMW sedan at a high rate of speed. He took off down Burnside Road and his excessive speed generated two calls to the 911 Communications Centre.
He was eventually traced back to the Red Lion Inn, thanks to some diligent work by the officer. The man was staying at the hotel and his car registered to a room.
The man was held for court late Tuesday and VicPD was coordinating his return to the mainland with Coquitlam RCMP. He also faces new charges of dangerous driving, flight from police, obstruction, and breach of recognizance.
