November 29, 2012
ESQUIMALT, B.C. – This Saturday, Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific) [FDU(P)] will participate in their 3rd annual Turkey Run, a local relay run in support of the Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund Society. Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. the public may see and hear Royal Canadian Navy divers, support staff, family, and volunteers running through a designated route in the municipalities of Colwood and Langford.
The running route, which will be traffic-controlled by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), takes participants from the FDU(P) facility in Colwood to Westshore Town Centre and back.
The public are invited to watch the run at Millstream Village and Belmont Park. Both locations will have hot dog stands manned by Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund volunteers. Hot dogs can be purchased by donation. Westshore Town Centre will also showcase Sonar, the Royal Canadian Navy mascot, from 12:15-1 p.m.
In addition, Millstream Village and Westshore Town Centre shopping areas will have FDU(P) personnel and the unit’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robot and bomb disposal truck on site.
Since starting the Turkey Run in 2010, FDU(P) has raised $30,000 in support of the Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund. At Christmas time, the Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund Society prepares up to 700 hampers for less fortunate families in the local community.
