Residential Leaf Pick-up Program Info for #yyj

“Leaf” it at the Curb
Residential Leaf Pick-up Program
Date: Thursday, November 8, 2012
For Immediate Release

VICTORIA, BC — City Parks crews will soon be collecting leaves in Victoria neighbourhoods. Residents can place their leaves in loose leaf piles or in tied, clear 100% compostable bags at the curb for pick-up. There is no limit to the number of leaf piles or bagged leaves that can be set out.

Victoria residents have two options for leaf collection:

Scheduled Neighbourhood Leaf Collection:
Victoria residents are encouraged to look up their neighbourhood’s leaf collection deadline to have bagged leaves or leaf piles at the curb for pick up at: www.victoria.ca/leafpickup
As City trucks will only make one pass down each street, it is important to have leaves placed at the curb by this date. If a return trip is required, a $40 fee will be charged per household's request. Neighbourhood leaf collection ends in early January 2012.

Bagged Leaves Call for Pick-up Service:
Until Friday, December 21, 2012, Victoria residents can contact the City Parks office at 250.361.0600 to arrange for their bagged leaves to be picked up at the curb for free within five working days. Callers are asked to provide their name, address and phone number. There is no limit to the number of calls for pick-up.

Leaf piles and leaves in compostable bags should be placed close to the curb and be visible and accessible from the street. To avoid flooding and slipping hazards, leaves and bags are not to be placed on sidewalks, in gutters or in the street. Leaves only please.

Victoria residents can drop off their leaf and garden waste for free, year-round at the City of Victoria Public Works Yard at 417 Garbally Road on Saturdays, from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Residents must show proof of residency in the form of a valid BC driver’s licence. Leaves are not accepted at the Beacon Hill Park Maintenance Yard. Residents can also use their leaves to make leaf mulch and to feed backyard composters.

The 2012 Residential Leaf Pick-up Schedule was mailed in early October to Victoria residents who reside in single family homes, townhomes and duplexes. The Leaf Pick-up Schedule is also available at City Hall, the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre, the Beacon Hill Park Maintenance Yard, local community centres and libraries, and on the City of Victoria website at: www.victoria.ca/leafpickup
