Community Allotment Garden Public Open House Feb 4 #Saanich

Proposed Community Allotment Garden

Monday, February 4th, 2013
Drop-in between 4 – 7:30 pm
Saanich Commonwealth Place, Cedar Room
4636 Elk Lake Drive, Victoria B.C., V8Z 5M1

The District of Saanich recognizes the need for local food security and the development of community gardens. Both the Official Community Plan and the Strategic Plan 2013‐2017 support agricultural initiatives within the municipality. The long term goal is to establish one community garden in each local area.

A portion of the open field behind Saanich Commonwealth Place is the proposed location for an allotment garden in the Royal Oak Local Area. The non‐profit group Saanich Allotment Garden Advocates Association (SAGA) has approached Saanich to help establish the community garden. The allotment garden is proposed to have two phases should the demand for garden plots warrant and the programming needs of SCP are met.

Saanich Parks and Recreation will be hosting a public open house to provide an opportunity for all members of the public to learn more about the proposal. Members of SAGA, as well as Saanich staff, will be present to answer questions, provide information and hear feedback from the community. Surveys will also be available for the public to fill out.
